Wall Ball Fielding Drill

Purpose:

This drill imitates fielding a short hop or a hard ground ball. It is an excellent drill for developing quick hands.

How to do the drill:

1.  The fielder stands a few yards away from the wall in a crouched position with his hands apart. If the player chooses to stand closer to the wall, his reaction time will need to be quicker.

2. The fielder throws the ball against the wall and drops to the fielding position.

3. The fielder moves to the right or the left to get in front of the ball and field it. The fielder cradles the ball into the body as the ball is fielded.

4. RIGHT HANDED THROWING FIELDERS:

If the baseball moves to the right, the fielder must use their backhand to field the ball. If the baseball moves to the left, the fielder must use their forehand to field the ball.

LEFT HANDED THROWING FIELDERS:

If the baseball moves to the right, the fielder must use their forehand to field the ball. If the baseball moves to the left, the fielder must use their backhand to field the ball.

More tips for wall ball:

  • A parent or coach can throw the ball against the wall to make the drill more challenging.
  • Create more of a short hop by tossing the ball high off of the wall.
  • A line drive can be simulated by throwing the ball off of the ground first. It should then bounce off of the wall and then come straight back to the fielder in the air.
